We all know the importance of differentiating in the classroom. There’s a lot of things we do to meet the diverse needs of our students – including creating student groups! Sometimes we create homogenous (same-ability) groups to work with students who need to work on the same skills on the same level. Other times, we create heterogeneous (mixed-ability) groups to help students work and support each other.As educators, we understand just how crucial it is to cater to the unique needs of our students. We go above and beyond to ensure their success, and one powerful tool in our arsenal is creating student groups. Today, I want to introduce you to an amazing resource that will make group creation a breeze—The Group Creator!
Thanks to my incredible husband’s Google Sheets wizardry, I’ve developed this game-changing tool to help teachers effortlessly form well-balanced student groups. With The Group Creator, you can easily create either homogeneous or heterogeneous groups, consisting of 2-6 students per group. What’s more, you can base your groupings on any category – for example, reading, math, behavior, speaking, listening, etc. —empowering you to address your students’ unique needs.
Let me walk you through the simple steps of using The Group Creator:
- Enter your students’ names.
- Generate category names
- Rate your students on a scale of 1-5 in each category, using provided key.
- Select your desired group type and size.
- Hit the appropriate button, and voila! Your groups are ready.
- Look at the bottom of your Google Sheets document to find a new tab with the groups you desired.
