I always encourage my students to ask questions about everything and anything to help them be curious about the world around them, but finding the answer is often more complicated than we have time for! Perplexity AI is a wonderful tool to continue to encourage inquiry, curiosity, and exploration. I will definitely be using this often in my classroom!

As someone who taught primary grades for 8 years, I never fully understood the pressure that upper grade teachers have during state testing. We always mention how silly state testing is, how stressful it is for our young students, and that it doesn’t accurately show the progress that students have made over the course of the year. We try to encourage our students throughout the process, but are we treating ourselves the same? I don’t think I’m the only one who takes it personally when students don’t do well. I am actively trying to reshape my mindset and accept the fact that I cannot control every single outcome. Rather than focusing on test scores, I want to focus on all of the things that I have done for my students since the beginning of the school year.

Being a problem solver has always been a big theme in my classroom! I made this problem-solving song about six years ago, and I still remember all of the words. Now that I teach fourth grade, I need to come up with a new one! However, most of these strategies would probably be the same lol. I just want my students to understand that they don’t need to panic or give up when problems arise. They have the tools and strategies to find or initiate a solution. Enjoy my singing! 🤪🤣😜

When you hear the word “creativity” or “being creative” what do you think about? I bet the majority of us think about art first - we think about painting, coloring and designing. And while yes, art can absolutely be considered a creative practice, there are also tons of other ways that people can be creative. Creativity is in all subject areas and anyone can be creative. Here are five common myths about creativity that students often believe. I think it’s so important that we give our students an opportunity to explore various creative paths, and that often starts with helping them understand the truth about creativity. So how do we do that?

We talk about it, we give students time to explore, we praise the process, rather than just the product, we explicitly teach the problem-solving process, and we help students understand that they are capable of being stepping outside their comfort zones.

Let’s talk about problem-solving! Every year I find myself thinking (and sometimes saying) please be a problem solver. Whether it’s a problem about not having the right supplies handy, a social problem out on the playground, or not understanding a lesson, students often need to be taught explicitly what to do when problems arise. I created these problem-solving cards to reinforce the idea that students have the knowledge and power to be able to solve many problems on their own, or at least initiate a solution by getting an adult involved.

These problem-solving cards are used in my classroom to spark conversations about everyday problems students may have in a variety of settings. It allows us to have a chance to discuss as a class some possible solutions, and which solution may be best possible choice. It’s a great conversation starter!

I use these during our morning meetings for a quick brain break, at the end of the day, or for a filler in the classroom.
